Research Interests and Backgrounds
I am a biologist and material scientist with a strong interest in applying micro/nano-technology platforms for cancer and other diseases drug discovery. My overall research interest is on precision medicine for human cancers, such as (1) an injectable nanoparticle generator platform for targeted delivery and in situ activation of prodrugs at the tumor lesion, (2) an inflammatory tumor vasculature-targeted delivery system for small molecule inhibitors and therapeutic siRNA, and (3) a highly potent therapeutic cancer nano-vaccine platform. A biomaterial and nanomedicine doctor by training, I have acquired strong experience in biomaterials during past years (Theranostics 2014, ACS Nano 2013, Advanced Healthcare Materials 2014, Nanoscale 2017), cancer genetics through postdoctoral training (Nature Biotechnology 2016, Materials Today 2017, Nano Letters 2017, Nanoscale 2017), and functional materials applied on medicine (Chemical Society Reviews 2018, Biomaterials 2018, Theranostics 2018, Clinical Cancer Research 2018, 2018). I have also ained extensive experience on cancer drug development with 10 years in the university and academic institute on development of novel cancer drugs. My current research is focused on development of therapeutics and technologies to advance cancer metastasis, tissue engineering, antibacterial materials and medical probes and so on. I strongly believe that different diseases should be treated differently based on their unique microenvironments and transport properties, and that nanotechnology offers a unique advantage on drug delivery to most of the illness. Recently, our studies have demonstrated that we now have powerful biomaterial systems to overcome biological barriers and effectively deliver therapeutics to such diseases (Iscience 2019, Bioactive Materials 2021, 2021, Advanced Science 2022, 2022, Chemical Engineering Journal 2021, 2022).
